Tasty, tasty, wine.

So I put the transfers on my wine bottle today.  It came out pretty much great on the bottle, but the shrink caps I had for the top kind of wrinkled a little bit.  Because I'm so generous... heh, out of the 25 I had, I only left 3 for myself.  The first one got really wrinkled because I held the hair dryer way to close... the second one did ok, but I had refilled my empty wine bottle with some diet coke.  Well, my bottle is kind of a brownish green when empty and when I had that one sealed up, it seemed more dark brown than black...

so on attempt 3, I bought some $2 Welch's grape juice to fill my bottle, and used my third and final shrink cap.  I got it on there pretty well, but went back and tried to make it seal tighter, causing it to wrinkle a little.  So I'm all out of shrink caps and this was the best I could get it.  It doesn't look bad, but it could be smoother.  Anyway, the transfers went on pretty easily and I used a spoon, as Stan suggested, to get them to stick on.  The main logo turned out great... the transfers look a lot more darker red than in these photos, but I'm too lazy for color correction.. anywayzzzz

...and for your entertainment, here's my awesome-tastic movie poster for Jon's class...

Wine bottle shrink caps

Here's the place I ordered the wine bottle shrink caps from

http://www.mountainhomebrew.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=228

There were under $5, but shipping is about $5 as well. I recieved them about 4 or 5 days after ordering them.

If they don't have what you're looking for, just google "wine bottle shrink caps" and you'll find a bunch of places that sell these.

craptastic layout 1.0

Here's something I put together within the last half hour for a possible 2 page spread... Once again, this is looking really conservative for a music magazine.. but maybe the image is somewhat striking.. I dunno... I got nothing.

Wine box

Well I started working on a box for my wine bottle while I'm waiting for the transfers to arrive... and over the weekend I wrapped a cylinder shapped box with a somewhat shiny faux-snakeskin fabric I found at hobby lobby... I think it looks pretty slick, but maybe it's a little over the top..

I'm going to try and keep my wine bottle box somewhat simpler than the bottle itself... and I don't plan on using the main "7" logo on the box.  I want that part to be the suprise on the inside... as you can see, I tried something with that logo on the outside.. and I reeeeally dont like it at all.

Anyway, so here are some samples I just made up... the cylinder is the one with the snakeskin texture...   as far as that version goes, I prefer the one on the middle picture

The top picture are concept for a box.  I made a box, and was thinking about punching holes and it and pulling strings through to kinda look like stitches... having it red might be a little to much, but I think having them black like the box would look pretty good.   I'm just going to end up doing 2 boxes, and pick one for the final day of class....

finishing touches

I still don't know about all the space on the first page under the photo of my Masthead/TOC spread... I'll see what Jon thinks about it. I just cleaned up some of the type today and changed the color a bit on the layout. As far as the wine bottle goes, the wine I have has a poem on the back of it and here's my first layout of how I might have it look. Also, since my bottle is tapered, I had to distort the logo a little bit to it looks normal when you wrap it on the bottle.

Masthead and TOC: Round 2

Ah... much better... so once again I had to create some total BS before I could get to what I was really looking for... I see that I started off decorating rather that designing.. I've come to a conclusion that if I'm creating something that is typographically based, I should probably start off with designing the type rather than the imagery. So I layed out my type, then filled in the space with my photos.. and even added in my little illustrations to finish it off... I think it's pretty decent, but maybe I can improve it more by Thursday... damn this is so much better...

I'm only unsure about all that space below "Cover Story"... maybe I should add in some type.

Masthead and TOC: Round 1

So I just spent the past few hours working on this layout. I took some time to make some interesting little illustrations of records and tapes.. and band names.. but I'm starting to think this has TOO MUCH illustration. And I didn't really get to work on the type because working with type is frustratingly SLOW for me in InDesign right now... I basically did all the art in illustrator then placed the background images in ID. I'm not sure about all this orange either. I'm going to try another version tomorrow on white. Any ideas?

7 zins...

I'm close to being done w/ the main imagery for the wine bottle itself, but I'm not comepletely sure what typeface to use. I definitely want to use a condensed font, and I always default to Gotham for some reason... but I might try Univers this time... hrmmmmmm.. which one looks better. The first or the second one?

We did it.

There is so much more to say, in my opinion, on Barack Obama becoming the 44th president of the United States... but at this moment in time, I am speechless... Congratulations America....

Wine!

Here's two logo ideas I'm working on. I decided to make that ornate looking logo I was talking about during the mini-critique out of type. So it has all the 7 deadly sins within the logo which forms around a number 7. However as it stands, you can't really make out the number 7. I'll figure out a solution if I decide to use this logo. Honestly I like the simple apple logo I made better for some reason. I guess it represents the first bite of the apple during the original sin... not too clever, but i think it looks decent. Anyway, I want to use a transfer and keep it one color, but that might be a problem w/ the ornate logo. We'll see...

Update:

Hrmmm.. I though I was done with this for the day... but I guess the ornate one can be a bit more readable if I just blacken more of the border of the 7... If I go this direction, I'll probably redraw the whole thing and draw the border around it as well...

Also I had an idea for the apple one. Maybe I can draw a snake that is creeping down and wrapping around the top of the bottle toward the apple. Like in this pic below... it could be interesting
